I remember the upsetting feeling at my first encounter with TAIHEN, which was more than 20 years ago, and I still wonder what it really was.

Sandbox Bento, the latest work of the troupe that has been exploring physical expression by physically disabled performers, is the second piece of their “Wandering Love” trilogy in which performers appear as typical food in a Japanese Bento lunchbox such as Umeboshi pickled plum and octopus-shaped sausage. In spite of the humorous scenes that had rarely been seen in their previous works, the questions that the “sandbox/lunchbox” as a miniature of society or isolated space raises out of the nostalgia of live Klezmer music have intensity that reveals what is hidden in daily life. We find liberation and joy of life there, but at the same time, the pain and sadness of “going out even crawling” as the director Manri Kim says are manifested, which speaks for the ongoing struggle.

In the times of tendency towards efficiency and constraints on expression, the various shapes and movements of their bodies in leotards and the voices that emerge there must be of even more importance than before.

劇団態変(大阪)Performance Troupe TAIHEN (Osaka)

Since its foundation in 1983, based on the artistic director Manri Kim’s idea that unprecedented beauty can be created through transforming the very disabilities of the physically disabled into expression, the physical theatre troupe has had only physically disabled performers and director. They have consistently pursued physical expression by the physically disabled to overthrow the foundation of the eugenic values of the world human history, with strong awareness that that is the only meaning of art, and aim to create physical performance that propose alternative values of the human body.
