Samuel Beckett's Happy Days is practically synonymous with the theater of the absurd. This staging by Kamome Machine sheds new light on Happy Days through an emphasis on corporeality. A woman is buried in a mound of steel, and a man lies down on the floor. Alongside the copious text of Happy Days, a new approach to politics will emerge, revealed by the performance's exploration of the modern body. This performance won the Excellence in Direction Award at the 2016 Toga Theater Competition and was featured as part of Theater Commons Tokyo’18. Each time, Kamome Machine's staging of Happy Days has dramatically transformed in response to the performance space. What images will emerge from the former rubble of Yokohama?
