“Dancer, writer, ...who speaks? Who writes?”

The Philosophical Enactments are short pieces that lie in an area between dance and discourse, movement and the thinking about movement.

Philosophical Enactment 1 (Japan premiere) is a long continuous spiraling of the body in conversation with Aveek Sen, a literary and poetic writer whose references linger in a visual and intellectual space of the contemporary.

Philosophical Enactment 2 (world premiere) deconstructs the physical language of part 1, and is a work with Sreenath Nair – academic and performance studies scholar, whose long-time research lies in the tension between ancient Indian performance knowledge and contemporary European performance discourse.

The work attempts to make sense of the visual ephemeral. To generate discourse and ways of thinking that originate from the Indian context, yet remain in a critical relationship with the outside. And finally it is a work that oscillates and churns within the long debated questions of body and mind.

Padmini Chettur (Chennai)

Padmini began her contemporary dance career in 1990 with Chandralekha (1928–2006), a radical modernist who deconstructed the form of Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam. Breaking away from her work in 2001 and deriving vocabularies from phenomenology, cultural studies, insect movements, astronomy, physiotherapy and sport, Padmini's practice has shifted the choreographic tradition to a minimal language that visually translates concepts of time and space as they relate to contemporary experience.

Helly Minarti (Independent Scholar/Curator, Yogyakarta)

Helly Minarti works as an independent dance scholar/curator, exploring radical strategies to connect theory and practice. She is mostly interested in historiographies of choreography as discursive practice vis-a-vis the eclectic knowledges that infuse the understanding of human body/nature. Her most recent curatorial project is Jejak-旅 Tabi Exchange: Wandering Asian Contemporary Performance. Helly has just relocated to Yogyakarta where she is setting up LINGKARAN | koreografi, a collaborative research platform focusing on expanding the notions of choreography.
