The Retreat is a choreographic research process that Thanapol Virulhakul and dancers have been investigating for more than a year, drawing from forms of retreat from strangers, things and the unknown practiced in daily life, with the aim of arriving through the body at new understandings of and relationships with otherness. Performances as selected compilations of the process were presented in Bangkok in 2018, but it has still been ongoing and aims to develop transnationally, while the philosophy behind it is deeply rooted in the modern sociopolitical history of Thailand. In TPAM2019, following attempts in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, it is presented as an open work-in-progress workshop with local dancers.

Choreographer/performer. Born in Tokyo. After studying contemporary dance and psychology at Portland State University and working in NYC, she moved to Brussels, where she met Norwegian choreographer Heine Avdal. They have been collaborating since 2000 and founded “fieldworks.” Their work is concerned with “performativity” and allows for an open interpretation of movement as a heterogeneous combination of a variety of media drawing on a broad range of disciplines and expertise. They create projects not only in theatre spaces but also in offices, hotels and supermarkets where their subtly estranging interaction with the space suggests rethinking the notion of the everyday itself.
