Constellation of Violence focuses on the culmination of the Cold War in Indonesia in 1965, from its lead-up to its aftermath. Noted down in memory, the “30th of September Movement” in 1965 had taken its toll, the star Army generals. The incident provided justification for the military forces and militias to commit atrocities, in order to “eradicate communism” (and anyone accused of it) down to their roots. While what really happened on that bloody night has been endlessly debated, the state command under the New Order regime had the sole control over what became the historical narrative, the effects of which have been ingrained and passed down through generations.

Irwan Ahmett

Irwan Ahmett is an artist who positions his existence in the complexity of humanity issues through spatiality of histories and permanent impact of colonialism, and reflects those in the global geopolitical context. Through art practice that contains “polite subversive” sentiment, Irwan often presents tense yet surprising experience of events without having the pressure to materialize the art. When it’s assured that art is a matter of sensibility, he explores, imagines and applies it to the re-questioning of the conception of art in the gesture of disobedience towards propaganda, ideology, power and tendency claiming the status quo in a society.
