The music of José Maceda contains a crucial paradox. Yuji Takahashi reflects: “By looking into the last one thousand years of rural musical activity, Maceda has developed his own music that cannot be found anywhere else.” Maceda tried to return to the origin of sound, but in doing found himself looking to the future, with decidedly contemporary resonances and colors. He consistently renewed the narrative and technique of his composition, ventured into new domains, and worked in a variety of evolving styles. For this reason, it is quite hard to define his work. In this talk, we will delve into the jungles of his creations to uncover the philosophy that underscores his music.
