Last year 50 years have passed since Butoh dance was born in Japan. Abroad high value has been put on it, but on the other hand in its home country it is neglected now. However, as a matter of fact new talents are emerging one after another! Please come to confirm it by your own eyes and body. This time we present three Butoh dancers in one’s thirties. Yumi Sagara floats distorted eroticism, Seigi Tanaka transforms a good young man into a flower of evil, Chikako Takano conceals fascination and nostalgia in her long hair and beautiful body in shape.

"The Rite of Spring" is the latest work of Kakuya Ohashi and Dancers which has been running in the battle front of the contemporary dance scene in Japan. It’s their drastic challenge to the masterpiece of Stravinsky's ballet music. It may superimpose the bodies of the 10s of current century when a wave of globalization sweeps over the world on one of the world greatest masterpiece symbolizing the 10s of last century when the world was rushing from confusion to the war. In dreamy recollection, men await for the unknown and stay awaited by the unknown, story starting to happen and yet never happening. In the end, only their breathing remain like buzz in the ear. "Myself left inside a space of total emptiness, inside this endless piles of garbage", "Physical presence of the body, emotions, transformations of self-awareness and its surroundings, changing flow of time..." Mikuni Yanaihara started her career as the leader/choreographer of "Nibroll," a multi-media art collective founded in 1997. With her unique choreography inspired by quotidian gestures, she un-sentimentally represents the atmosphere of Tokyo today. Drawing worldwide attention, she has done a solo performance in The Kitchen(NewYork) and been invited to Laokoon Summer Festival(Germany) in the past. In 2005, she initiated “Mikuni Yanaihara Project,” as the playwright/director. She is highly acclaimed both as a choreographer and a dramatist. With the visual artist Keisuke Takahashi, Yanaihra also started a new project: “Off Nibroll.” In this new endeavor, her pieces have been shown at art exhibitions all over the world.

The reason we dramatize modern literature is because we have interest in the being of literati. Looking into the traces of struggle that the authors have gone through and the deep urge of why they had to write those pieces, we reveal the "past" of Japan that lead us to this present day. From our previous performance, "A.R -A story of Ryunosuke Akutagawa-" by Koharu Kisaragi, we have decided to focus on litterateurs viewed from contemporary playwrights. For our upcoming performance, we will dramatize "Urikotoba" by Hideki Noda, a story of the poet Kotaro Takamura and his wife well known for "The Chieko Poems".

Who Knows We Are Not Injured like the Others

chelfitsch

©Dieter Hartwig

Chelfitsch, led by Toshiki Okada, is going to present its long-awaited new piece “Who Knows We Are Not Injured like the Others?” In this performance, Okada seeks to explore a new frontier in the world of theatre. The story takes place on August 30, 2009, as well as on the night before. Even when our society is filled with anxiety, some of us may not feel it as the others do. The play provocatively suggests that every one of us could be those who do not--or rather cannot--share the anxiety of the society, i.e. "strangers" to the general public. The company's name, "chelfitsch," is Okada's coinage. It represents the baby-like disarticulation of the English word "selfish." It is meant to evoke the social and cultural characteristics of today's Japan, not least of Tokyo. Main works: On the Harmful Effects of Marihuana(2003), Five Days in March (2004), Air-Conditioner(2004), The End of Toil(2005), Freetime(2008), Hot Pepper, Air Conditioner, and the Farewell Speech(2009)

When I was a kid, I pretended to study for entrance examinations but read comics and looked at pinups instead. I never understood the need for proof. Wasn't an answer enough? The only thing left inside me is the strength and resolve that would spring from me whenever they tried to remove me from my room. But I will never be able prove anything, ever.

A small piece on eloquence. Normally, d’UOMO ex machina and COLLOL both present their work in a larger space with full of physical movements, so even if the focus is pointed towards the act of speech it is natural to start investigation from the body and space. How do you use your body and space surrounding you when you are speaking?
Loqui...loquamur, loquamini, loquantur...
Investigation about eloquence bringing us to think about two traditons as shown in the title.

Kitakyushu Performing Arts Center

©Umemoto Masahiro

Kitakyushu Performing Arts Center's new production "Hakobune (Ark)" belongs to one of its Produce Series that takes up a theme relating to the city of Kitakyushu using local actors. "Hakobune" is written and directed by an emerging young writer/director, Shu Matsui (Sample). He has been highly acclaimed by his unique directing style that portraits an essential emptiness in modern life. Matsui's new work, "Hakobune" is inspired by "Kani-Kosen (The Crab Cannery Ship)" which depicts the harsh situation and exploitation of blue-collar workers. Using his interviews with the actors living and working in local Kitakyushu, Matsui builds up the reality of people without ground.
