This talk and video session examines phases of our “bodies” in music, dance, theater, art and films since the end of WWII. Standard and non-standard practices are re-defined, with the intention to make these ‘functional’ again through investigating discourse surrounding improvisation and playback as it relates to performance. Chaired by Ootani who considers and plays music in terms of its relation to recording media, and Kimura whose field is the critique and study of dance.

Born in 1972. He has co-written and had published two books on the history of jazz and popular music with KIKUCHI Naruyoshi, Yuutsu to Kannou wo Oshieta Gakkou [School That Taught Melancholy and Sensuality], Tokyo Daigaku no Albert Ayler [Albert Ayler of Tokyo University] In 2006, he released his first solo album, Kagan Bojitsusho Yori, which is based on HORIE Toshiyuki. Currently, he is writing a series of essays crossing literature and music called Songs to be Carried, Songs to be left for the website of Esquire Magazine Japan.

Born in 1971. In 2003, his Odoru Koto to Mieru Koto: Hijikata Tatsumi no Butoh Ron wo Megutte [To Dance and to See: On Hijikata Tatsumi's Butoh Theory] won a prize at a critical essays on art competition organized by Bijutsu Shuppan-Sha. Kimura then started to work as a dance, art, theater and anime critic. Of late, he has been writing and editing dance-related issues for magazines such as Bijutsu Techo, Elle Japon and TV Bros. He is also a scholar of modern aesthetics and dance aesthetics.
