Romeo and Juliet is one of William Shakespeare’s early masterpieces. This play presents the doomed love between star-crossed young lovers born in two conflicting families. Using the classic translation by Shouyou Tsubouchi (originally printed in 1933), we bring a rush of fresh energy to this piece through humorous, deep, beautiful, and ephemeral musical theatre. This performance was premiered at Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture in November 2014. After some brushing up, now we’re off to TPAM 2015!

SYAKE-SPEARE

The name of our company (SYAKE-SPEARE) comes from the reading in the roman alphabet of SHAKESPEARE after changing the letter “H” to “Y,” which are the initials of the two founders. (Syake means salmon in Japanese.) We’ve created and performed a new style of musical theatre since 2010. We compose our pieces with live musicians, actors, dancers, and also singers / narrators called “Utai.” This particular method is inspired by the style of Noh theatre. We’ve received prizes at the Toga Theatre Competition for our performances of The Cherry Orchard by Chekhov in 2013, and Yoroboshi by Yukio Mishima in 2014.

Registration for TPAM is required to receive the benefit.
